Après une courte accalmie qui a permis à la plupart des pilotes de chausser les pneus slick, la pluie tombe à nouveau sur les 24 Heures. De quoi encore accroître l'avance des deux Audi de tête sur la Bentley, moins à l'aise sur piste humide.

9h08 La Saleen n°60 a crevé du pneu arrière droit à l'entrée des Hunaudières alors que Franz Konrad était au volant. Le pilote est parvenu à ramener sa voiture à bon port.

9h14 Alors que la Chrysler n°14 était arrêtée pour un ravitaillement, elle a été rentrée dans son stand pour effectuer des réparations plus importantes.

9h18 Troisième de la catégorie GT, la Porsche n°74 du team Luc Alphand Adventure est restée un moment à son stand pour une intervention sur la voiture. Une fuite hydraulique au niveau de la commande d'embrayage a fortement retardé l'équipe.

9h32 Comme lors des arrêts ravitaillements précédents, la Cadillac a connu de nouveau des problèmes de démarreur.

Après un début de matinée épargnée par les éléments, la pluie a recommencé à tomber sur le circuit. La plupart des pilotes qui avaient chaussé les pneus slick se sont donc vu contraints à remettre les pneumatiques à rainures.
Cela ne pertubera sans doute pourtant pas la longue marche vers la victoire de l'Audi n°1 de Frank Biela relayé par Tom Kristensen. A deux tours, suit la deuxième Audi officielle. La Bentley, 3e, s'est assurée une belle marge de manoeuvre sur sa poursuivante immédiate, la Chrysler n°16 d'Olivier Beretta. Les Américaines du Team Oreca sont toujours deux (sur trois) en course, alors que la moitié des équipages ont jeté l'éponge.

La Chrysler de Beretta ainsi que la Courage n°17 ont profité des problèmes de démarreur de la Cadillac n°6 pour s'emparer des 4e et 5e places. Mention spéciale à Jean-Christophe Boullion qui a assuré un relais significatif pour la voiture aux couleurs de Pescarolo Sport avant de donner son volant à Laurent Redon. Après ses ennuis, la Cadillac a rétrogradé en 9e place avant de remonter à la 7e place sous la pluie.

La Corvette n°63 de Ron Fellows crée toujours la surprise en s'octroyant non seulement la première place en GTS, mais aussi en se hissant à la 6e place du général à la faveur du long arrêt au stand de la dernière Cadillac en course.
Le 50e anniversaire de la plus célèbre sportive made in USA risque bien d'être fêté dignement par cette voiture que l'on n'attendait pas forcémant à une place aussi haute. Elle est suivie dans sa catégorie par la Saleen n°60 d'Oliver Gavin, 10e au général, qui s'est fait une belle frayeur après une crevaison du pneu arrière droit.

Seules deux LMP 675 sont encore en course, mais la Reynard-Roc Auto a donné des signes inquiétants après de longs arrêts aux stands pour refaire le plein d'eau après des problèmes de refroidissement. Espérons que la mécanique tiendra pour cette voiture, toujours 9e, qui domine sa catégorie devant la WR, 20e.

Chez les GT, la lutte bat son plein entre la Porsche Freisinger Motorsport n°77 pilotée par Romain Dumas et la Porsche Seikel Motorsport n°83 de Luca Drudi. En 11e et 12e places, les deux voitures ne se sont pas lâchées de plus de 5 secondes. Finalement, la Seikel, où figure notamment le benjamin de l'épreuve, Gunnar Jeannette, a pris le meilleur sur la n°83.

Luc Alphand sur la Porsche n°74 figurait en 3e position de sa catégorie avant de s'arrêter au stand pour un problème de fuite hydraulique au niveau de l'embrayage. Du coup, la voiture de l'ancien champion du monde de ski a rétrogradé en 8e position de sa catégorie. Mais pour Luc Alphand, l'important est de se faire plaisir.

The rain is back

After a short lull, which gave the drivers the opportunity to change to slick tyres, the rain is falling again on Le Mans. The Audis will probably be increasing the gap with the Bentley, which is less at ease on the wet track.

Although the weather was clement in the early morning, the rain started to fall again on the track. The majority of the drivers, who were running on slicks, had to go back to the pits to change back to tread tyres again.
However, this will probably not disturb Franck Biela and Tom Kristensen with their n°1 Audi, in their long march towards victory. The other official Audi follows two laps behind. The Bentley - in 3rd position - has intensified the gap upon its immediate follower, Olivier Beretta's n°16 Chrysler. The Americans from the team Oreca are still two - out of three - in the race, while half of the teams have withdrawn.
Beretta's Chrysler and n°17 Courage took advantage of the n°6 Cadillac's starter problems, to take the 4th and 5th positions. Note Jean-Christophe Boullion's very special stint for the Team Pescarolo Sport's car, before he left the wheel to Laurent Redon. Following its problems, the Cadillac was in 9th position, but it succceded in moving up 2 places to 7th in the rain.
The Ron Fellows' n°63 Corvette is still causing a stir by claiming not only the first position in the GTS class, but also by elevating itself to 6th position in the overall ranking due to the long pit stop of the last running Cadillac.
The 50th anniversary of the most famous sports car made in the U.S.A. might be celebrated fittingly by this car, which was not necessarily expected to achieve such a high position. It is followed in its class by Olivier Gavin's n°60 Saleen, 10th in the overall ranking, who had a good fright with a puncture in the rear right tyre.
Only two LMP 675 class cars are still running, but the Reynard-Roc Auto has shown worrying signs after long stops at the pits to refill with water after having experienced cooling problems. Let's hope that the car won't breakdown. It's still 9th and is first in its class before the WR in 20th position.
In the GT class, the fight is ongoing between the Freisinger Motorsport n°77 Porsche driven by Romain Dumas and the Luca Drudi's Seikel Motorsport n°83 Porsche. In 11th and 12th positions, the two cars have never had more than 5 seconds between them. Finally, the Seikel, driven by the race's youngest participant, Gunnar Jeannette, is ahead of n°83.
Luc Alphand with the n°74 Porsche was in 3rd position of his class before stopping at the pits due to a hydraulic leak by the clutch. Consequently, the car of the former ski world champion has dropped back to the 8th position of its category. But for Luc Alphand, the most important thing is to do it for pleasure.
